Santorum: I Don’t Hate Gays, but…
WHAT HE SAID:
“Well, look, I have nothing against gay people. They have rights of every other citizen. But what they did in Iowa and what some are trying to do, not all gays, but some are trying to do is change the laws of this country with respect to what the definition of marriage is. But if there are differences, I’m certainly going to speak out on those differences when I think it’s in the best interests of our country to have laws that reflect having men and women raise children and form solid marriage bonds.” - Rick Santorum, when asked why any gay person would vote for him. (Via - Think Progress)
WHAT I HEARD:
“I have nothing against gay people as long as they keep on working and paying taxes like every other citizen, but continue to forgo their rights. Being a contributing member of society, that pays my salary is a good thing for them to do because us heterosexual politicians need their tax dollars to help keep them away from our kids in schools, and out of the lives of our other God fearing traditional constituents. I think it’s in the best interest of the country to keep marriage the way it is because clearly only gay parents raise gay children. See how important they are to me, their tax-dollars are paramount to me successfully discriminating against them.”
And before I get jumped on for twisting his words, if he stopped to think about how much of a hypocrite he really was, he’d hopefully shut the hell up. Politicians can’t have it both ways. Either allow gays to be exempt from having to pay the same taxes as heterosexuals if they are to exempt from all the rights; or shut the hell up and stop trampling over their rights when you benefit from their income. I don’t give a crap if he wants to be a homophobic asshat in private, but as a PUBLIC servant, he, and every other homophobic public servant, needs to keep it to themselves. ~ Kim
