I keep hearing conflicting accounts on what Komen said they were doing in regards to Planned Parenthood. I really don’t care. Based on their original decision earlier this week, I’m standing by why I’m no longer supporting them. ~ Kim
So they’ve back-pedaled and all is to be forgiven now; right? We should forget that they caved to anti-abortionists and jump back on the Susan G Komen bandwagon; right?
As someone who has supported them faithfully with a $25/month donation since finding a lump in my breast in March of 2006, I’m not so quick to forgive. Komen’s actions were that of cowardice and their explanation for those actions were pure and utter bullshit. Planned Parenthood does not provide mammograms but what they do provide are breast exams and breast cancer education. Education is how I found my lump, not via a mammogram. I was in my 20s and younger than the recommended age to begin annual mammograms. Teaching people how to perform self breast exams leads to the finding breast cancer sooner than mammography.
So I’m standing by the decision I made Tuesday to cancel my donations to Komen and move that $300/year over to Planned Parenthood. Early detection is vitally more important to me than anything Komen has to say right now. I have the benefit of great health insurance, but so many do not.
So yes it is a good thing that they have decided to continue funding Planned Parenthood. It is however a shameful thing that they had to be told to do so by the actions of those of us who were are outraged. I will personally never forget that they bowed to abortion propagandist. Hopefully my yearly mammograms will continue to show no return of my growth, but if it ever does, and it turns out to be malignant, I will not regret this decision for a second.
Early detection offered at Planned Parenthood saves lives of those who would otherwise not be able to afford the screening. It’s just that simple.
